  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Unable to shake off concussion symptoms

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/16/16) Franzen (concussion) is likely to remain on long-term injured reserve for the four years that remain on his contract with the Red Wings, MLive.com reports.

Franzen, who missed the majority of the 2014-15 campaign and only lasted two games this season, explained that his concussion symptoms resurface whenever he attempts to exert himself. Khan suggested that Franzen's situation mirrors that of Marc Savard and Chris Pronger, former stars still possessing NHL contracts without much of a chance to ever play again due to the their respective concussions. As sad as it is to see a career derailed by injury, one can marvel at Franzen's past accomplishments with Detroit. The "Mule" collected 370 points (187 goals, 183 assists) in 602 career games, adding power points in nearly 20 percent of his appearances. In 2008, Franzen scored 13 goals in 16 playoff games and helped Detroit earn its 11th Stanley Cup.

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/20/15) Franzen (concussion) was placed on long-term injury reserve Thursday, Fox Sports reports.

Franzen, who's been out since early October with a concussion, remains out indefinitely per genermal manager Ken Holland. Concussion symptoms forced him to miss much of the 2014-15 season as well, so at this point it's unclear if he'll be able to return at all this year.

Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Placed on IR on Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/15/15) Franzen (concussion) was placed on IR on Thursday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Franzen is currently dealling with a recurrence of the concussion symptoms he's been battling since January, which forced him to miss much of the 2014-15 season. Head injuries are always scary, and the fact that the Franzen has been dealing with the symptoms for much of the past 10 months makes his ailment particularly disconcerting. His next opportunity to return to game action will come on Oct. 23 against the Flames, but it's unclear how realistic that return date is at this point in time.

Red Wings LW Johan Franzen will sit out of Tuesday's game

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/13/15) Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will sit out of Tuesday's matchup with the Lightning, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

It's unclear exactly what type of injury he's dealing with, but he wasn't feeling 100 percent coming into the matchup and the Red Wings decided to keep him on the bench. Franzen sat out the entire second half of the 2014-15 season due to concussion symptoms, so he very well could be dealing with those symptoms again. Whether that's the case or not, his next opportunity to return will be Friday against the Hurricanes.

January 1, 2015: Red Wings' Franzen Dishes Out Two Wednesday
Franzen tallied two assists and three shots on goal in Wednesday's win over the Devils. The slate has been fairly dry of late for Franzen, who has accumulated four points over his last nine games. He made the most of his 13:37 of ice time Wednesday, but his standing on the Red Wings' third line may not improve his chances of piling up points at a steady clip anytime soon.
