  • Burke leaves debut on Saturday

(1/21/07) Sean Burke stopped 23 of 24 shots in his Kings debut on Saturday before dehydration forced him out of the game with 16:40 left in the third period. He departed right after making a couple of rapid-fire saves on rebound attempts by Phoenix captain Shane Doan while on his knees. Yutaka Fukufuji relieved Burke and surrendered the tying goal, a wrist shot from the top of the right circle by Ladislav Nagy that bounced off the rookie's glove with 6:02 left in regulation. Travis Roche got the game-winner on a shot from above the right circle that caromed off defenseman Mattias Norstrom's skate with 1:39 to play.

    Brust yanked after one period

(1/19/07) Kings G Barry Brust lasted only one period on Thursday against the Blues. The rookie goalie allowed two goals on 10 shots before being replaced by Yutaka Fukufuji, who stopped 17 of 18 shots. The Blues won the game 3-1.

Fukufuji to share time in goal

(1/18/07) The Los Angeles Kings, playing without their top two goalies, claimed veteran Sean Burke off waivers Thursday from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Burke, who turns 40 later this month, had a 14-10-4 record with a 2.80 goals-against average in 35 games for Tampa Bay last season. He became expendable when the Lightning acquired Marc Denis and Johan Holmqvist in the offseason, and has a 4.52 goals-against average in seven games for Springfield of the American Hockey League this season.

    Fukufuji pounded in first start

(1/17/07) Hossa scored three goals for the second time this season, leading the Atlanta Thrashers to a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night and ruining the first start for Fukufuji. Already the first Japanese-born player in the NHL, Fukufuji was lifted less than two minutes into the second period after Jim Slater's deflection gave the Thrashers a 3-1 lead. He stopped only 6-of-9 shots. "It was pretty bad," Fukufuji said. "I can play better."

    Fukufuji likely to start Monday

(1/14/07) It's possible that coach Marc Crawford will give rookie Yutaka Fukufuji his first NHL start on Monday in Dallas. Fukufuji began the season in the East Coast Hockey League, dressed for one game with the Kings but did not play earlier this season and then went to their AHL affiliate at Manchester, N.H. He had a 2-0 record with a 1.30 goals-against average in three games for the Monarchs before the Kings recalled him Friday. He entered the game on Saturday against the Blues and became the first Japanese player in the NHL. He took the loss after allowing the game winning goal in the third period. He stopped four of five shots.
