  • Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Could be in mix for Las Vegas expansion team

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/11/17) Howard is a candidate to be exposed to the expansion draft in June, TSN reports.

Simply put, the Red Wings have too much money invested in goalies Howard and Petr Mrazek -- $9.29 million to be exact -- and GM Ken Holland will only be able to protect one netminder. Another option would be to deal one of them this offseason. With Scott Darling moving from Chicago to Carolina and Ben Bishop's contract rights secured by Dallas, it's shaping up to be a weak market for teams still hoping to shore up their goaltending. Howard was brilliant this season, crafting a 2.10 GAA and .927 saving percentage for a squad that was perpetually hobbled, but the veteran backstop was limited to 26 games due to a significant knee injury. The 33-year-old is taking a businesslike approach amid rumors that he could leave Motown, telling reporters: "It's pretty much out of your control. I haven't thought about it because you don't want to stress yourself out. I haven't spoken to anybody about it."

Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Will represent USA at Worlds

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/11/17) Howard will play for USA in the 2017 IIHF World Championship, Helene St. James of freep.com reports.

The 32-year-old backstop only drew 24 starts this season due to a knee injury, but he was impressive with a .927 save percentage and a 2.10 GAA. Although it wasn't close to a full season, it's important to note that this was the best stat line of Howard's career, which means a lot, considering the lack of blue-line help in Detroit this season. Howard will have an opportunity to show his worth on a world stage, which could continue to add substance to rumors that he'll be a Vegas expansion draft pick.

Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Wins season finale

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/9/17) Howard stopped 24 of 25 shots in a 4-1 win over the Devils on Sunday.

And with that, Howard and the Wings officially shut down Joe Louis Arena on a high note, prevailing in the team's final game at the old historic barn. The American netminder was hampered by injury for a good portion of the season, as this was just his 10th victory of the campaign. He was able to compile a .927 save percentage and 2.10 GAA despite the adversity, however, so look for a bounce-back from Howard in 2017-18.

Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Defending net in finale

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/9/17) Howard will patrol the crease Sunday in the team's season finale against the Devils, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.

Howard has consistently split games with Petr Mrazek, putting him in line to finish out the season after Mrazek started Saturday. He allowed just two goals in his last outing and will look to build off that Sunday in a matchup with one of the league's lowest-scoring teams.

Red Wings' Jimmy Howard: Suffers tough-luck loss Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/4/17) Howard yielded a pair of goals on 24 shots Tuesday for a 2-0 road loss to the Senators.

The outing weakens Howard's record to 9-11-1 on the year, but it's worth noting that the veteran backstop was done in by a pair of tough goals from the Senators; one was from Erik Karlsson at a seemingly impossible angle, and Tom Pyatt's shot appeared to get deflected off the stick of Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser for the score. Assuming the goalie rotation continues in Detroit, it'll be Petr Mrazek between the pipes for Saturday's home contest against the Canadiens, with Howard likely to draw the regular season finale a day later versus the visiting Devils.

April 7, 2015: Wings' Howard Gets Tuesday Start
Howard will start Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes.Howard, who backstopped Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over the Wild, returns to the Wings' net Tuesday after giving way to Petr Mrazek in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Caps. Howard will take aim Tuesday at a Carolina team that dropped a 4-3 decision to the last-place Sabres on Monday.
April 4, 2015: Wings' Howard: 22 Saves In Shootout Win
Howard made 22 saves through regulation and then stood tall through eight rounds of the shootout to deliver a 3-2 win over the Wild on Saturday night. He really needed the win Saturday -- he's been scuffling of late and it was just his second win in his last seven starts. It certainly doesn't cement his status as playoff starter just yet, but it's a nice rebound from some sketchy play over the last month. The Wings need he or Petr Mrazek to step up and seize the reins heading into the postseason.
