  • Oilers' Kris Russell: Expresses desire to stay in Edmonton

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/12/17) Russell, a pending unrestricted free agent, wishes to remain with the Oilers.

Russell has played for four different clubs since the Blue Jackets made him a third-round pick in 2005. He garnered a one-year deal with Edmonton, notching 13 points in 68 regular-season games, as well as four in 13 over the course of the postseason. Russell's bread and butter comes in the form of blocked shots -- he had a whopping 213 of those this year -- and that skill is quite transferable if he happens to wind up with yet another organization for the 2017-18 campaign.

Oilers' Kris Russell: Contributes two helpers in Game 3

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/1/17) Russell notched a couple of assists in Sunday's Game 3 loss to the Ducks.

It was the first points of the playoffs for Russell, who has been relied on more defensively in Edmonton. He blocks shots and logs solid minutes on the team's second defensive pairing with Andrej Sekera, but there really isn't much else he offers from a fantasy perspective. The 29-year-old only collected 13 points in the regular season, so look elsewhere if you're searching for offensive-minded blueliners.

Oilers' Kris Russell: Leads team in blocked shots

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/24/17) Russell blocked five shots in Edmonton's series-clinching win over San Jose on Saturday.

Russell collected 27 blocked shots in the opening-round series, which is second among all players in the postseason and a full six blocks better than Dan Girardi in third. That's about the only value Russell has had in fantasy, though. He has no points, seven shots and a minus-1 rating in the playoffs.

Oilers' Kris Russell: Sitting out Sunday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/4/17) Russell will be a healthy scratch for Saturday's home game against Detroit, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports.

The 29-year-old defenseman will watch from the press box Saturday after playing in five straight contests since returning from a mystery injury. Over the past five games, Russell tallied one goal and added 10 blocked shots, which is his specialty. By sitting out, he opens the door for Eric Gryba and Matt Benning to record some playing time.

Oilers' Kris Russell: Scores game-winning goal against Cats

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/22/17) Russell scored the game-winning goal against Florida on Wednesday.

After missing five games with an undisclosed injury, Russell returned to the lineup Tuesday and had a minimal impact. His third-period tally was the difference Wednesday, though, and it was actually the 29-year-old rearguard's first goal of the season. Russell hasn't moved the needle offensively this season, but fantasy owners can still count on his willingness to block shots -- he averages 3.0 per game.

  • April 11, 2015: Flames' Russell Likely Out Saturday
Russell (rest) is expected to sit out Saturday's season finale against the Jets, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet reports. The Flames plan to send several key regulars to the press box Saturday after clinching a playoff berth with Thursday's win over the Kings. Russell will finish a productive season with marks of four goals, 34 points, a league-leading 283 blocks, and a plus-18 rating over 79 games.
April 8, 2015: Points Trickling In For Flames' Russell
With a power-play assist in Tuesday's win over the Coyotes, Russell has a point in four of his last five games.Russell has quietly been delivering top-notch fantasy production from the blue line since early March, as he's now posted three goals and 11 assists over his last 18 games. His increased productivity has helped keep the Flames afloat in the wake of Mark Giordano's season-ending biceps injury.
