Power Rankings: Wings say bye to heroes, keep on humming

When it comes to transitioning from one era to another, it's hard to do it better than the Detroit Red Wings this season.

No longer are they the team of Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan, the two future Hall of Famers who were key leaders during the organization's rise to greatness over the past decade. Both left after last season, but even with a major change to the locker room dynamic, Detroit hasn't missed a beat and heads into the homestretch in a neck-and-neck battle for the conference and overall NHL lead.

Even so, the defending Presidents' Trophy winners have flown under the radar because the spotlight has been shining mainly on teams like Buffalo, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, and lately in particular, on Central Division rival Nashville. But these days, it's hard to overlook the Red Wings, who have been one of the league's hottest teams since Thanksgiving.

There are still old warhorses like Nicklas Lidstrom, who became captain, Chris Chelios and Kris Draper around to maintain the link to the past. Now the team is being driven by a new generation of stars, most notably Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. Along with Tomas Holmstrom, Zetterberg and Datysuk make up the league's most dangerous line in the past two months and trigger a potent Detroit attack. But unlike years past, the key to this team's success is less about offense than an outstanding defense that has made ageless goalie Dominik Hasek's life a lot easier by allowing the fewest shots against in the league.

"We have forwards who back-check real hard and we have five players in the middle all the time, so we try to push the puck carrier to the outside and that takes away a lot of shots," said Lidstrom. "That's our system."
