Islanders give C Park two-year extension

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Center Richard Park signed a two-year extension with the New York Islanders through the 2010 season.

Park had 10 goals and a career-high 16 assists last season, his first with the Islanders after attending training camp on a tryout.

"To say I'm happy would be an understatement," Park said in a release Sunday. "Since the first day of training camp last year, I was determined to make the most of the chance Garth Snow and Ted Nolan gave me."

The 31-year-old has 60 goals and 73 assists in 452 career regular-season games with the Islanders, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Philadelphia, Minnesota and Vancouver. He was originally drafted 50th overall by Pittsburgh in 1994.

"Richard exemplifies the type of character players we want to be New York Islanders," said GM Snow. "He's a team-first guy who plays with his heart on his sleeve and battles every shift."
