Detroit's Chelios plays in 248th postseason game, breaking Roy's record

DETROIT -- Chris Chelios was on the ice for his 248th playoff game, breaking the NHL record set by Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy.

"I never really kept track of the individual things I've done, I've always been prouder of the team accomplishments," Chelios said after helping Detroit beat Nashville 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series. "My kids and family think it's pretty cool."

The 46-year-old Chelios is making his 23rd postseason appearance, extending his own mark.

He became the second-oldest player in an NHL game earlier this season. Hall of Famer Gordie Howe was still skating at 52 for the Hartford Whalers during the 1979-80 season -- almost a decade after leaving the Red Wings.

Before Game 2 against the Predators, some of Chelios' teammates were giving him a hard time about breaking Roy's milestone.

"When you play until you're 60, what do you expect?" teammate Darren McCarty joked.

Chelios has won two Stanley Cups, three Norris Trophies as the league's top defenseman and is an 11-time All-Star.
