Sabres sign Persson, first-round draft pick in 2006

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Swedish defenseman Dennis Persson, the Buffalo Sabres' 2006 first-round pick, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team on Tuesday.

As part of the deal, Buffalo will allow Persson to honor his commitment to play in the Swedish Elite League next season, before joining the Sabres organization for the final two years of the contract.

Selected 24th overall and listed at 6-foot-1 and 181 pounds, Persson had one assist in 21 games with Swedish Elite League's Djurgarden, and added four points (one goal and four assists) in 21 games with second tier Nykoping last season.

The Sabres were required to sign Persson or allow him to re-enter the NHL Draft later this month.
