Heatley, Spezza score in Ottawa's preseason opener vs. Rangers

OTTAWA -- Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and Mike Fisher each scored to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday in the first preseason game for both teams.

Brandon Dubinsky netted two goals for New York, which fell behind 3-0 after Fisher scored against Steve Valiquette 2:12 into the second period.

Heatley opened the scoring on a delayed penalty 2:57 in, and Spezza made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal at 13:17 of the first.

Dubinsky scored a power-play goal against Martin Gerber 3:21 into the second. He added his second of the game, a short-handed tally, 14:44 into the third when he beat Brian Elliott on a breakaway.

Gerber made 23 saves through two periods, and Elliott added 11 in the third for new Senators coach Craig Hartsburg, who won his debut with the team.

Valiquette, who backed up starter Henrik Lundqvist last season, made eight saves in two periods. Miika Wiikman stopped all eight shots he faced in the third.

Both teams will open the regular season in two weeks with a pair of games in Europe. Ottawa will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins twice in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Rangers play the Tampa Bay Lightning in a two-game set in Prague, Czech Republic.
