Power Rankings: Sharks hit season swimming

The San Jose Sharks won the ultra competitive Pacific Division last season on the strength of an incredible sprint to the finish line. This time around, they are setting the pace with a great start.

Equally important, though key division rivals Anaheim and Dallas have stumbled out of the gate, San Jose's new-look lineup -- which now features veteran defensemen Rob Blake and Dan Boyle and rookie coach Todd McLellan -- is already showing signs of being in midseason form.

The talent-rich Sharks have jumped off a 3-0 start with dominant wins against Anaheim and Los Angeles that saw them get just about everyone in the lineup in on the act. San Jose had a pair of lines and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff do the scoring in the opening night win over the Ducks, and then got goals from three different lines in Saturday's win at home against Los Angeles.

The Sharks then finished off the back-to-back sweep of the Kings the following night when rookie Lukas Kaspar picked up the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

"We talk about it among the guys because we never had two lines going last year," said Sharks forward Joe Pavelski. "You can win a lot more games if you do."

Especially if it doesn't come at the expense of the defense, which was the real story behind San Jose's regular season success in 2007-08. The Sharks were third in overall defense and first on the penalty kill and so far this season, they've allowed only two goals, while stopping 10 of 11 power play opportunities by their opponents. And they've limited opponents to an average of just 21 shots per game.

"It's going to get tougher, which is why it's really important to get off to a good start," Pavelski said.

So far, so good.
