ANAHEIM, Calif. - Nashville Predators defenseman Dan Hamhuis doesn't score many goals, so he might as well make them count.
His first of the season came 2:17 into overtime and lifted the Predators to a 4-3 victory over the Ducks at Honda Center on Friday night.
The victory was only the second in five games for the Predators and the third loss in a row for the Ducks.
"They got two power-play goals and I think we did too," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "...We didn't create enough of the grind game early in the hockey game. We didn't sustain a lot of power in the offensive zone until halfway through the hockey game."
The Ducks could use some work on the other end of the ice as well.
Their inability to get the puck out of their zone was what led to Hamhuis' shot from the top of the slot. That was the shot that beat goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the rest of the Ducks.
"Those guys can skate and move the puck well," defenseman Scott Niedermayer said. "We had a few little breakdowns in our end that led to some of their chances. When you play a team that plays well the way they did, you can't do that.
"It was a bit better effort than the last two games but still not enough to get two points, which is what we set out to do. It's disappointing."
The Predators thought they had scored the winning goal at 4:35 of the third period when Joel Ward scored a power-play goal for a 3-2 lead. Ward got his stick on Shea Weber's shot from the left point and deflected it into the net.
Ryan Getzlaf scored the equalizer at 9:33 of the period, pushing the puck past a jungle of legs and sticks planted in front of Nashville goalie Dan Ellis.
The teams scored twice in the first period, with the Ducks taking the early lead and then having to play catch-up.
Brendan Morrison scored 1:59 into the contest but Chris Kunitz tied the score with a power-play goal after the Predators scored twice to take the lead. Morrison's goal was his second in his last three games.
The Ducks caught a bad break when defenseman Francois Beauchemin suffered a leg injury midway through the third period. He left the game and didn't return. He will be evaluated on Saturday.
