OSHAWA, Ontario -- The Oshawa Generals retired Bobby Orr's No. 2 jersey on Thursday night before an Ontario Hockey League game against Peterborough.
The Hall of Fame defenseman played for the junior team from 1962-66. He had 38 goals and 56 assists in 1965-66 and finished with 116 goals and 205 assists.
"I did a lot of growing up in Oshawa from ages 14 to 18 and I'll be forever grateful for those people who helped me in that time of my life," Orr said. "It's pretty nice. This is where my career started ... and this is something I'll never forget."
Hockey Night in Canada personality Don Cherry, who coached Orr with the Boston Bruins, attended the ceremony. Ian Young, a former teammate of Orr's in Oshawa, and Wren Blair, the man largely responsible for getting Orr into the Boston organization, were also on hand along with several of Orr's family members.
The number was the third retired by the Generals, following the late Red Tilson's No. 9 and Eric Lindros' No. 88.
