Power Rankings: Blackhawks breaking out behind Wall, Huet

Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make. At least that's what the Chicago Blackhawks are telling themselves as they ride a seven-game winning streak that has a lot to do with a goaltending tandem they tried very hard to break up before the season.

Problem was no one wanted to take the expensive contract of Nikolai Khabibulin's off Chicago's hands last season, forcing the Blackhawks to tie up a significant part of their salary cap in a position they expected to be handled mainly by free-agent acquisition Cristobal Huet. Instead, Khabibulin has been the dominant force thus far with a 10-1-4 record, although Huet's game started improving when his partner was injured briefly a couple of weeks ago.

And that's all good for the Blackhawks, one of the league's most exciting young teams who came into the season with very high expectations. A rough start led to the firing of coach Denis Savard just four games in, but under the steady guidance of veteran Joel Quenneville behind the bench, Chicago has since evolved into one of the NHL's elite outfits.

The Blackhawks have one of the league's top offenses with 14 players having double-digit point totals and sophomore Patrick Kane among the league's scoring leaders, and a mobile defense that moves the puck and limits chances in its own end. And of course, there is the goaltending.

"That team right now is the best in the NHL," said Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault following Saturday's 3-1 loss to the 'Hawks at GM Place.

Now you might have trouble convincing fans in Boston about that since the Bruins have been nothing short of dominant for the last two months. Boston has picked up 45 points over its last 26 games (22-3-1), which is the league's best mark over that period, and they have outscored teams 105 to 54 during that stretch.

And for the first time this season, the Bruins take over top spot in our power rankings.
