Blue Jackets at odds with beer maker over proposed tax increase

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets and beer maker Anheuser-Busch are clashing over the wisdom of a proposed tax increase.

The team owners want to tax beer, wine, liquor and cigarettes locally to underwrite a county takeover of the arena where they play.

The brewer's president opposed the tax hike in meetings with Gov. Ted Strickland and legislators Thursday. The team wants the proposal inserted into the budget that starts July 1.

A tax would defy local voters who repeatedly rejected public financing of the arena, built by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.
