Roundup: Chimera wheeled off ice during Jackets' loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Cal Clutterbuck scored twice to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 2-0 preseason victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.

Blue Jackets forward Jason Chimera was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher after being checked into the boards by Wild center Eric Belanger with 6:17 left in the second period.

Chimera appeared to go into the boards face first after getting hit by Belanger. He stayed down on the ice for about five minutes before being placed on a stretcher and wheeled off. He gave two thumbs up on his way off and a team official said he was coherent. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Belanger said he left Chimera a message wishing him well. He said he's not a dirty player and that he thought Chimera saw him coming into the corner.

The Wild gave coach Todd Richards a win in his home debut.

Goalies Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding stopped 27 shots in the shutout. Full story

Red Wings 4, Rangers 3

DETROIT -- Jason Williams' goal 8:02 into the third period broke a tie and the Detroit Red Wings rallied for a victory over the New York Rangers.

Justin Abdelkader had a goal and an assist and Valtteri Filppula and Brett Lebda scored for Detroit (2-0), which got all of its goals in the third period. Starting goalie Chris Osgood made 18 saves and Thomas McCollum stopped 10 shots.

Artem Anisimov had a goal and an assist and Enver Lisin and Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers (0-2-1). New York starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 14 saves and Matt Zaba stopped 15 shots.

Williams broke the 2-2 tie with a slap shot from the top of the right circle that bet Zaba high on the long side. Abdelkader added his goal with 3:42 left.

Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 3

PITTSBURGH -- Jason Blake played a part in two of four power-play goals scored by Toronto in the second period and the Maple Leafs downed the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Blake scored, then assisted on defenseman Ian White's goal to erase a 2-0 deficit. John Mitchell scored midway through the second to put Toronto (2-1) ahead and defenseman Juraj Mikus then capped the scoring.

Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin needed less than 20 minutes to pick up where he left off last season. Malkin, the NHL's leading scorer in the regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs, deflected a shot from Matt Cooke past James Reimer at 13:24 of the opening period. Cooke's goal at 6:43 opened the scoring for Pittsburgh (1-1).

Defenseman Brooks Orpik added a power-play goal for Pittsburgh in the third period.

Predators 4, Hurricanes 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- David Legwand had a goal and two assists to lead the Nashville Predators past Carolina.

Mike Santorelli and Dan Hamhuis each had a goal and an assist for the Predators. Peter Olvecky added an empty netter on the power play, Martin Erat had two assists and Pekka Rinne stopped 10 shots in 1 ½ periods.

Erik Cole and Eric Staal scored for Carolina, and Cam Ward made 21 saves.

Legwand's go-ahead goal came early in the second when he snatched a turnover in the Hurricanes' zone and snapped the puck past Ward to make it 2-1.

Canadiens 2, Senators 1

MONTREAL -- Brian Gionta scored 15:06 into the third period of his Montreal debut to lead the Canadiens past the Ottawa Senators.

Ben Maxwell scored in the second period for Montreal, which beat Florida 3-2 on Thursday in its preseason opener.

Jaroslav Halak made 14 saves through the first 30:18, then Curtis Sanford stopped all 10 shots he faced the rest of the way.

Milan Michalek scored in his debut for Ottawa (0-3).

Lightning 2, Thrashers 1 (OT)

TAMPA, Fla. -- Marty St. Louis scored with 25.1 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Tampa Bay Lightning over the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Lightning failed to capitalize on a two-man advantage in the extra session, but center Vincent Lecavalier picked up a loose puck moments later and moved in unopposed on goalie Ondrej Pavelec and set up a backhander by St. Louis.

Tampa Bay starting goaltender Mike Smith allowed one goal in two periods to earn a long-awaited win. Smith was barely tested in his first period since the lingering effects of a concussion sidelined him with 10 weeks remaining last season. He needed only four saves to protect a 1-0 lead provided by Ryan Malone, whose power-play goal beat Pavelec on the glove side with 3:08 left in the period.

It took just three seconds, however, before the only crowd Tampa Bay will host before the regular season was cheering. Immediately after the faceoff, Zenon Konopka of the Lightning and Atlanta's Josh Gratton began trading punches. They fought again with 6:31 to go in the third period, this time with Gratton being charged with a game misconduct.

Blues 6, Avalanche 2

ST. LOUIS -- Nick Drazenovic, Paul Kariya and Alex Steen staked St. Louis to a first-period lead, and the Blues went on to beat the Colorado Avalanche.

T.J. Oshie, B.J. Crombeen and Derek Armstrong also scored for the Blues, while Keith Tkachuk had two assists.

The Avalanche, who beat Dallas on Thursday in their preseason opener, got goals from Chris Stewart and Matt Duchene, the third overall pick from the 2009 draft.

Goalie Ty Conklin, signed as a free agent by the Blues in the offseason, made his debut with the team and stopped 21 shots through two periods before being replaced by Jake Allen. Colorado's Tyler Weiman played the entire game and stopped 30 shots.

Oilers 4, Panthers 0

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Mike Comrie had three assists in his return to Edmonton and the Oilers remained perfect in preseason play, defeating the Florida Panthers.

Taylor Chorney, Patrick O'Sullivan, Shawn Horcoff and J.F. Jacques scored for the Oilers (3-0). Nikolai Khabibulin, making his first ever appearance for Edmonton, turned aside 18 shots for the shutout.

Comrie, a surprise free agent signing by the Oilers earlier this month after leaving the organization on bad terms in 2003, received a cheer mixed in with a few catcalls when his first assist was announced.

The tentative early response turned into a full-on chant for Comrie in the third period when fought Eric Himelfarb after having added two more assists to bring his preseason total to five points in two games.

Ducks 4, Coyotes 3 (OT)

PHOENIX -- Defenseman Luca Sbisa scored on a power play 1:23 into overtime to cap the Anaheim Ducks' four-goal rally in a victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Joffrey Lupul scored twice and Dan Sexton added a goal as the Ducks scored three times in a 9:51 span of the third period to force overtime.

Sbisa's goal came with Anaheim (2-1) on a two-man advantage after two Phoenix penalties, one in the final seconds of regulation.

Peter Mueller, Jeff Hoggan and Jim Vandermeer scored their second goals of the preseason for the Coyotes (1-2-1).

Canucks 6, Sharks 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Henrik Sedin scored two goals and his brother Daniel added another as the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks.

Willie Mitchell, Dave Scatchard and Christian Ehrhoff also scored for the Canucks.

Dan Hinote and Jamie McGinn scored for the Sharks.

The Canucks scored three times in the game's first nine minutes and took a 5-0 lead into the third period.
