Red Wings' Franzen has torn ACL, out at least four months

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen is out for at least four months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The club announced the injury Friday.

The team says Franzen was injured in Thursday night's 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Franzen scored the game-winning goal in the second period of Detroit's home opener.

The Red Wings drafted the 29-year-old native of Vetlanda, Sweden, in the third round of the 2004 draft as the 97th overall pick. He had 34 goals and 25 assists in 71 regular-season games last season.

I was watching the game and didn't see when it happened.  He scored the winning goal (vomit) on the power play, and seemed fine the rest of the night.  Anybody else know how it went down?

Now thats gonna really hurt, no mule on the ice. After watching the game last night, and seeing that horrifying start they had in Sweden, I thought that win gave them a boost. And with signing Brad May, which was great to see him come in there and not five minutes in get caught up in a fighting major, I thought such a good set of ...(more)

This is truly bad news for hockey in general.  I hope that whatever medical procedure he has done takes and he is back on the ice soon.

He grates on me.... but I'd love to have him on the Penguins.

Get well soon.

This is a huge loss for the Wings.  With the offense already depleted from last year, losing a 30+ goal scorer will really impact the team.  Hopefully some of the young guys can step up and produce.  Bertuzzi will get more ice time and hopefully he can remain healthy and be an impact player like he once was.  Go Wings!
