Power Rankings: Kings following NHL's turnaround script

Updated Nov. 3

The good thing about being in Hollywood is that when new script ideas are lacking, there is always the option of recycling an old one. Like say, the story about taking a perennial loser and turning it into a winner, seemingly overnight.

The hockey version of this movie has played out a couple of times already in the aftermath of the lockout, first with the Pittsburgh Penguins and more recently with the Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams took their lumps for a few seasons, drafted high and as a result, put together lineups that grew quickly together before taking the league by storm.

In Los Angeles, the Kings are trying to become the next ones. So far they seem to be on the right path.

Colorado, and to a slightly lesser extent the Phoenix Coyotes, may have laid claim to the NHL's best Cinderella story early in this season. But for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2002, the young Kings have been no less impressive. Los Angeles has the third-most points in the Western Conference, tied for fourth in the league and is a top 10 team in overall offense and the power play.

The Kings are getting the kind of goaltending they've been lacking for years from 23-year-old Jonathan Quick, the defense has two budding young stars in Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson, and leading man Anze Kopitar is the top scorer in the NHL. Meanwhile, the supporting cast that has been methodically put together by GM Dean Lombardi since he took over in 2006 has been improving with every game under the patient coaching of Terry Murray.

Lombardi, who set the foundation in San Jose when he was there with his drafting and development process, has used the same philosophy in Los Angeles, stockpiling young assets and supplementing them with a few key veterans. The most notable has been Ryan Smyth, who came in a trade this summer from the Avs and is arguably the best turnaround player in the league. Smyth is putting up big numbers of his own, but more importantly, he has triggered Kopitar's breakout effort.

"Smitty knows how to play the game and he's rubbed off on Kopi," Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell said.

And on the rest of the team.

Here are the rankings through Monday night's games:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
1Sharks · Trends1
Thornton, Heatley and Marleau make a pretty good line, don't they? All are among the top five scorers.
2Blackhawks · Trends5
A Thanksgiving treat is coming for the Blackhawks, who are about to get Marian Hossa in the lineup for the first time this season.
3Devils · Trends2
Suddenly the road isn't as friendly to the depleted Devils, who have added Dainius Zubrus to the long injured list.
4Flyers · Trends4
Philly's power play is struggling and the penalty killers have been burned five times in the past three games, twice in a 3-1 loss at Phoenix.
5Flames · Trends6
Jarome Iginla keeps lighting it up for the Flames, with nine goals in his past 11 games.
6Capitals · Trends7
Mike Green has been on fire lately and has taken over the scoring lead among D-men.
7Penguins · Trends8
After a blazing start, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has cooled off in November. He's 3-5 and has been pulled twice.
8Sabres · Trends3
Good starts weren't enough to overcome less than impressive play at even strength for the Sabres and resulted in an 0-2-1 mark last week.
9Predators · Trends15
Even if Nashville still isn't scoring much, the power play has been timely lately. And the Preds have nine wins in 11 games, including five in a row.
10Senators · Trends23
The Sens offense showed some life with 14 goals in wins over Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Toronto last week.
11Bruins · Trends20
The B's got a boost from Milan Lucic's return and have another one coming with Marc Savard set to go.
12Panthers · Trends22
Panthers seem to like playing in front of crowds because they swept their trip to Buffalo, Detroit and MSG. Tomas Vokoun has been outstanding in goal, and Florida has won eight of 11.
13Red Wings · Trends9
Detroit's offense ranks seventh, but the numbers are deceiving because 19 goals came in three games. The Wings have scored two or fewer nine times.
14Kings · Trends10
Call this gut-check time for the young Kings and particularly Anze Kopitar, with veteran Ryan Smyth on the shelf for a month.
15Blue Jackets · Trends14
Derick Brassard has been a disappointment this season, with only three goals a minus-8 rating through 20 games.
16Canucks · Trends12
Slowly but surely getting the key pieces back, with Luongo a couple of weeks ago and now Daniel Sedin.
17Coyotes · Trends18
Still winning games on the ice, but losing at the box office. Bankruptcy court filings show the 'Yotes could be $50 million in the red from this season.
18Avalanche · Trends13
Reality may be setting in for the slumping Avs, who have blown two-goal leads to lose the last two games and are 1-4-1 in the last six.
19Lightning · Trends16
Doing things the hard way. Tampa Bay has been outshot in 10 of the past 11 games, yet the Bolts have managed to get 14 points by going 5-2-4.
20Stars · Trends21
Brad Richards and linemates James Neal and Loui Eriksson have accounted for nearly half of the Stars' goal-scoring so far.
21Thrashers · Trends11
Atlanta is struggling at home but tough when it gets a lead. The Thrashers are 7-0 when scoring first and 6-0 when ahead after the first period.
22Rangers · Trends17
Marian Gaborik and Vinnie Prospal are carrying the offense, but it isn't enough for the free-falling Rangers.
23Islanders · Trends19
Trent Hunter has been on a roll since returning from the IR with a point in all six of his games.
24Blues · Trends27
After a quick start, Paul Kariya has picked up only one assist in his past 12 games.
25Canadiens · Trends24
Carey Price has been a lot better of late, allowing no more than two goals in each of his last five starts.
26Oilers · Trends25
Coach Pat Quinn, whose Oilers have lost five of six and eight of 10: "There is some intelligence needed in this game, some IQ. We have some skill, but skill hasn't done squat for us yet."
27Ducks · Trends26
Corey Perry is riding a 14-game point streak, but the Ducks need better work from both of their goalies.
28Wild · Trends28
Andrew Brunette has stopped scoring with only one goal in 11 games after getting seven in his first 11.
29Hurricanes · Trends30
Unlike the rest of the 'Canes, Tuomo Ruutu has been on fire lately with four goals and five assists in the last six games.
30Maple Leafs · Trends29
At least now Vesa Toskala doesn't have to worry about going winless this season.

For the most part the power rankings are fine, but I have noticed that Wes has a tendency to overrank teams that he expects to be high but have poor records and underrank team that he expects to be low that are doing better.  What I mean by this is that Sharks for the last two weeks were ranked number 2 when in reality ...(more)

I'm not sure how a team can fall apart for a couple weeks like the Rangers did and then win one game 1-0 against boston and then we should assume they are just as good as their 7-1 start.  Rangers lost 5 out of there last seven games and they are still considered to be the seventh best team.  Even the writer Wes states t ...(more)

Pens: 11-3, 22 points, 8-2 in last 10
Sharks: 10-4-1, 21 points, 7-2-1 in last 10

Yet, SJ leaps PIT.  Nice!

You put the Sharks at no. 1? The Pens, despite missing gonchar and malkin have more points in less games and you move one of the leagues most notorious playoff choking teams ahead of them? Looks like you're following the Prisco flavor of the week formula.

Last week you had the Isles last behind Toronto and now you only have them at 24.  How can you have them behind Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Anaheim or even Edmonton.  They thoroughly dominated edmonton just last night.
