Power Rankings: Kings following NHL's turnaround script

Presented by Epson

Updated Nov. 3

The good thing about being in Hollywood is that when new script ideas are lacking, there is always the option of recycling an old one. Like say, the story about taking a perennial loser and turning it into a winner, seemingly overnight.

The hockey version of this movie has played out a couple of times already in the aftermath of the lockout, first with the Pittsburgh Penguins and more recently with the Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams took their lumps for a few seasons, drafted high and as a result, put together lineups that grew quickly together before taking the league by storm.

In Los Angeles, the Kings are trying to become the next ones. So far they seem to be on the right path.

Colorado, and to a slightly lesser extent the Phoenix Coyotes, may have laid claim to the NHL's best Cinderella story early in this season. But for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2002, the young Kings have been no less impressive. Los Angeles has the third-most points in the Western Conference, tied for fourth in the league and is a top 10 team in overall offense and the power play.

The Kings are getting the kind of goaltending they've been lacking for years from 23-year-old Jonathan Quick, the defense has two budding young stars in Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson, and leading man Anze Kopitar is the top scorer in the NHL. Meanwhile, the supporting cast that has been methodically put together by GM Dean Lombardi since he took over in 2006 has been improving with every game under the patient coaching of Terry Murray.

Lombardi, who set the foundation in San Jose when he was there with his drafting and development process, has used the same philosophy in Los Angeles, stockpiling young assets and supplementing them with a few key veterans. The most notable has been Ryan Smyth, who came in a trade this summer from the Avs and is arguably the best turnaround player in the league. Smyth is putting up big numbers of his own, but more importantly, he has triggered Kopitar's breakout effort.

"Smitty knows how to play the game and he's rubbed off on Kopi," Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell said.

And on the rest of the team.

Here are the rankings through Monday night's games:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
1Devils · Trends4
New Jersey's best D-man Paul Martin is closer to returning, and the Devils are having the best start in franchise history.
2Kings · Trends11
A Hollywood fantasy? Maybe, but the Kings are on fire of late and start the new week leading, yes leading, the Western Conference.
3Penguins · Trends3
Marc-Andre Fleury is 7-1-1 in his past nine starts, with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.
4Bruins · Trends7
Looking more like the defending Eastern regular-season champs with each passing game. Boston is getting great special teams play of late.
5Sabres · Trends8
Big week including back-to-back statement wins against the high-powered Caps and Blackhawks, who scored one goal between them in the two games.
6Blackhawks · Trends1
Chicago is having a tough time scoring goals, with only 15 in the past eight games none on the past 19 power plays.
7Capitals · Trends6
In the past two months, Mike Green has been on the scoresheet almost every night, getting points in 21 of 27 games.
8Avalanche · Trends13
Avs have won only five games within their division, but three have come against chief rival Calgary.
9Sharks · Trends2
Only three wins in nine games within their own division for the suddenly toothless Sharks.
10Coyotes · Trends9
Seems like the Coyotes players are dead set against moving. Phoenix has won six in a row at home and 12 of 17 in its building overall.
11Flames · Trends5
Kiprusoff has allowed more than two regulation goals only once since mid-November.
12Red Wings · Trends14
As injuries continue to hit, Todd Bertuzzi is picking up some offensive slack with four goals, including two OT winners, on eight shots in his past two games.
13Canucks · Trends15
More than 60 forwards have more ice time than Henrik Sedin, yet he's the NHL leader in even-strength points and is tied for second in the overall scoring race.
14Oilers · Trends26
A franchise-record road trip with five straight wins is impressive, so is coming back in three of them.
15Wild · Trends16
Martin Havlat started showing signs of life on the weekend for the Wild, who improved to 12-5-3 in their past 20 games.
16Thrashers · Trends10
Strong finishers. Atlanta hasn't lost a game it has led after two periods and has scored more goals in the third than anyone.
17Predators · Trends12
Nashville gets good production from the back end but still has scored fewer goals than it has allowed.
18Stars · Trends17
Same old story for a team that gets points by avoiding regulation losses. Dallas got four of a possible six with a 1-0-2 swing through California.
19Senators · Trends18
Alex Kovalev is back in everyone's good graces, at least temporarily, thanks to a hat trick that included his 400th career goal.
20Maple Leafs · Trends27
Don't look now but the Leafs are in striking distance of a playoff spot and starting to make life tough for teams visiting the ACC.
21Canadiens · Trends24
The Habs are getting very good work from Carey Price lately, they're just not helping him much by allowing so many shots.
22Islanders · Trends22
Key stretch coming up for the Isles, who are much better at home than on the road. Seven of their next 10 are on Long Island.
23Blues · Trends19
Few teams enjoy getting away as much as the Blues. They have only four of their 13 wins in their own building.
24Rangers · Trends21
Coach John Tortorella on his team's current situation: "Let's call it what it is; it's a mess."
25Flyers · Trends20
Changing coaches hasn't made much difference for the Flyers. Philadelphia is now 1-4 under Peter Laviolette and has won only twice in 11 starts.
26Lightning · Trends23
The Lightning have only one point in their past four games and only 13 goals in a 1-6-2 slide.
27Panthers · Trends25
Goalie Tomas Vokoun has looked sharp, but he has gone eight starts in a row without a win for fast-fading Florida.
28Ducks · Trends28
Undrafted free agent Dan Sexton has been a pleasant surprise since being called up with four goals and a plus-5 rating in five games.
29Blue Jackets · Trends29
The unraveling continues with Ken Hitchcock calling out his top players including Rick Nash, who has only two goals in 12 games.
30Hurricanes · Trends30
Are Eric Staal and his $8.2 million cap hit on the block? The 'Canes need to do something and Staal has only five goals in 22 games this season.

For the most part the power rankings are fine, but I have noticed that Wes has a tendency to overrank teams that he expects to be high but have poor records and underrank team that he expects to be low that are doing better.  What I mean by this is that Sharks for the last two weeks were ranked number 2 when in reality ...(more)

I'm not sure how a team can fall apart for a couple weeks like the Rangers did and then win one game 1-0 against boston and then we should assume they are just as good as their 7-1 start.  Rangers lost 5 out of there last seven games and they are still considered to be the seventh best team.  Even the writer Wes states t ...(more)

Pens: 11-3, 22 points, 8-2 in last 10
Sharks: 10-4-1, 21 points, 7-2-1 in last 10

Yet, SJ leaps PIT.  Nice!

You put the Sharks at no. 1? The Pens, despite missing gonchar and malkin have more points in less games and you move one of the leagues most notorious playoff choking teams ahead of them? Looks like you're following the Prisco flavor of the week formula.

Last week you had the Isles last behind Toronto and now you only have them at 24.  How can you have them behind Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Anaheim or even Edmonton.  They thoroughly dominated edmonton just last night.
