Power Rankings: Hot Devils keep adding to Lou's legacy

Updated Nov. 10

There are several reasons Lou Lamoriello was honored with a long-overdue induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame, including the role he played in opening the door for Russians to play in the NHL and the growth of the sport in the United States.

Yet Lamoriello's greatest legacy has to be the culture of winning he has created for the New Jersey Devils organization since becoming its general manager 22 years ago.

Lamoriello took over a team that had missed five consecutive playoffs and had been once famously been called a "Mickey Mouse" outfit by Wayne Gretzky, turning it into a conference finalist in his first season and a model franchise for the league ever since. New Jersey has won three Stanley Cups and eight division titles during Lamoriello's tenure, but more telling, has managed to remain among the elites consistently, regardless of the economic system or often-significant personnel changes.

This season has been no different, even if the Devils made only one notable move after being bounced in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. And if turning to Jacques Lemaire to coach again suggested the Devils were going back to the future, well, that hasn't been a bad thing for the hottest team in the league right now. New Jersey has won five games in a row and remains the NHL's only unbeaten team on the road, despite a rash of injuries that has hindered Lemaire's effort to take on a more offensive style than he used in his first go-round with the Devils.

New Jersey is without its No. 1 defenseman Paul Martin and its best checking forward, Jay Pandolfo, until after Thanksgiving, but is getting stepped-up, two-way efforts from the top line anchored by Zach Parise to make up for it. And after a slow start, goalie Martin Brodeur is rounding his game into high gear.

As a result the Devils are charging hard toward the top of the Eastern Conference standings, as they usually do under Lou.

Here are the rankings through Monday night's games:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
1Sharks · Trends1
Thornton, Heatley and Marleau make a pretty good line, don't they? All are among the top five scorers.
2Blackhawks · Trends5
A Thanksgiving treat is coming for the Blackhawks, who are about to get Marian Hossa in the lineup for the first time this season.
3Devils · Trends2
Suddenly the road isn't as friendly to the depleted Devils, who have added Dainius Zubrus to the long injured list.
4Flyers · Trends4
Philly's power play is struggling and the penalty killers have been burned five times in the past three games, twice in a 3-1 loss at Phoenix.
5Flames · Trends6
Jarome Iginla keeps lighting it up for the Flames, with nine goals in his past 11 games.
6Capitals · Trends7
Mike Green has been on fire lately and has taken over the scoring lead among D-men.
7Penguins · Trends8
After a blazing start, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has cooled off in November. He's 3-5 and has been pulled twice.
8Sabres · Trends3
Good starts weren't enough to overcome less than impressive play at even strength for the Sabres and resulted in an 0-2-1 mark last week.
9Predators · Trends15
Even if Nashville still isn't scoring much, the power play has been timely lately. And the Preds have nine wins in 11 games, including five in a row.
10Senators · Trends23
The Sens offense showed some life with 14 goals in wins over Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Toronto last week.
11Bruins · Trends20
The B's got a boost from Milan Lucic's return and have another one coming with Marc Savard set to go.
12Panthers · Trends22
Panthers seem to like playing in front of crowds because they swept their trip to Buffalo, Detroit and MSG. Tomas Vokoun has been outstanding in goal, and Florida has won eight of 11.
13Red Wings · Trends9
Detroit's offense ranks seventh, but the numbers are deceiving because 19 goals came in three games. The Wings have scored two or fewer nine times.
14Kings · Trends10
Call this gut-check time for the young Kings and particularly Anze Kopitar, with veteran Ryan Smyth on the shelf for a month.
15Blue Jackets · Trends14
Derick Brassard has been a disappointment this season, with only three goals a minus-8 rating through 20 games.
16Canucks · Trends12
Slowly but surely getting the key pieces back, with Luongo a couple of weeks ago and now Daniel Sedin.
17Coyotes · Trends18
Still winning games on the ice, but losing at the box office. Bankruptcy court filings show the 'Yotes could be $50 million in the red from this season.
18Avalanche · Trends13
Reality may be setting in for the slumping Avs, who have blown two-goal leads to lose the last two games and are 1-4-1 in the last six.
19Lightning · Trends16
Doing things the hard way. Tampa Bay has been outshot in 10 of the past 11 games, yet the Bolts have managed to get 14 points by going 5-2-4.
20Stars · Trends21
Brad Richards and linemates James Neal and Loui Eriksson have accounted for nearly half of the Stars' goal-scoring so far.
21Thrashers · Trends11
Atlanta is struggling at home but tough when it gets a lead. The Thrashers are 7-0 when scoring first and 6-0 when ahead after the first period.
22Rangers · Trends17
Marian Gaborik and Vinnie Prospal are carrying the offense, but it isn't enough for the free-falling Rangers.
23Islanders · Trends19
Trent Hunter has been on a roll since returning from the IR with a point in all six of his games.
24Blues · Trends27
After a quick start, Paul Kariya has picked up only one assist in his past 12 games.
25Canadiens · Trends24
Carey Price has been a lot better of late, allowing no more than two goals in each of his last five starts.
26Oilers · Trends25
Coach Pat Quinn, whose Oilers have lost five of six and eight of 10: "There is some intelligence needed in this game, some IQ. We have some skill, but skill hasn't done squat for us yet."
27Ducks · Trends26
Corey Perry is riding a 14-game point streak, but the Ducks need better work from both of their goalies.
28Wild · Trends28
Andrew Brunette has stopped scoring with only one goal in 11 games after getting seven in his first 11.
29Hurricanes · Trends30
Unlike the rest of the 'Canes, Tuomo Ruutu has been on fire lately with four goals and five assists in the last six games.
30Maple Leafs · Trends29
At least now Vesa Toskala doesn't have to worry about going winless this season.

The Penguins have lost 3 in a row.  A bad losing streak for a team like them.  They have gone 3-5 since starting 9-1.  Time to panic? Not at all.  This downslide is 100% due to injuries.  They are playing without 6 of their top 8 players.  Evgeni ...(more)

Jackets are tied for first place in the central division and yet they still get no love and are behind the Blackhawks and the Red Wings.  Jackets are a top ten team right now, and i truely believe this because the team can score goals no problem, and when the goaltending gets ho ...(more)

Any way you look at it, the Wild suck right now and deserve to be at the bottom of the power ranks, I just question that we dropped a spot this week... The Wild won 3 of the last 4 against decent teams (The Rangers, Penguin ...(more)

I'm just curious how the hawks dropped six spots in the last week.  I could understand maybe a spot or two, but to have them not in the top ten is retarded.

The Carolina Hurricanes should be ranked way lower than 30th.  There have to be at least 5 KHL teams and maybe some AHL teams that are better than the Canes.  I just can't believe Wes would skimp on his research and only include NHL teams in this list.  Laziness.  Pure laziness.  I'm disappointed, Wes.

Hay Wes, if I remember correctly it was Marc Messier that made the MM crack not Gretz.

Wes,

If you think
Lamoriello is making an effort to adopt a more offense-oriented style than he's used in the past, do I have a deal for you! I've got some nice beach-front property in Nebraska and a great bridge to help you get there.

When did the Bruins win the Eastern Conference? I could be wrong but I thought Pitt won the last two
