Power Rankings: Hold off on those Detroit obits

Updated Nov. 17

It has been tempting to write off the Detroit Red Wings this season.

Even if they are not the oldest team in the league anymore, the Red Wings are still dominated by veterans and they have played a lot of hockey by going to the Stanley Cup Finals the past two seasons. Free-agent defections hit them hard over the summer and key injuries even harder since the season began.

Throw in two losses to presumed up-and-coming division rival St. Louis as the season opened in Sweden, some questionable goaltending and a first month that saw Detroit struggle to hover around .500, and it seemed plausible that a remarkable organizational run that produced four Stanley Cups and nine division flags in a dozen seasons had come to an end.

Problem is that dismisses a little too easily what is the Red Wings' biggest intangible advantage, their ability to win regardless of the circumstances or economic model. So even with all the early-season challenges, Detroit never lost sight of the high-powered Blackhawks in the Central Division, and with a 7-2-1 record over the past 10 games is in striking distance of the lead.

The offense that struggled early on has exploded in the past week, scoring nine goals against Columbus, eight of them on Steve Mason, and seven goals against Anaheim, six on Jonas Hiller. More important, players like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, who are supposed to step up, have been doing so of late, while Jimmy Howard seems to be staking a claim to the No. 1 goaltending job. Detroit might have options between the pipes in the weeks ahead, if for example the Islanders get Rick DiPietro back and make Martin Biron available as expected. In the meantime, Detroit just keeps motoring.

Here are the rankings through Monday night's games:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
1Capitals · Trends1
Jose Theodore is playing his best hockey since joining the Caps. He has won 10 starts in a row despite facing more than 35 shots in each game.
2Sharks · Trends2
San Jose is riding an eight-game winning streak on the road, where it has league's best record.
3Kings · Trends6
They get ahead and put things away. The Kings are 22-0 this season when taking a lead into the third period.
4Blackhawks · Trends3
Chicago's power play has been struggling lately, connecting only once in 22 tries in the past seven games.
5Senators · Trends5
Ottawa did not allow more than two goals in a game during its 11-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 37-13.
6Canucks · Trends4
Mason Raymond already has scored more goals this season than in his first two combined.
7Coyotes · Trends8
Despite its problems scoring on the power play, Phoenix needs only one more win to match last season's total.
8Devils · Trends10
Is the addition of Ilya Kovalchuk the ticket out of a very winnable Eastern Conference?
9Sabres · Trends7
Only two wins in their past 10 games has put the Northeast title in jeopardy for the Sabres.
10Penguins · Trends9
Sid's still scoring on a regular basis, but the defending Cup champs look vulnerable in their back end.
11Avalanche · Trends11
With Matt Duchene leading the way, Avs rookies have put up 114 points this season.
12Lightning · Trends26
Stability looks to be coming with an ownership change and maybe a playoff spot, too, thanks to seven wins in their past 10 games.
13Flyers · Trends12
Struggling to bury shots lately. Philly had 72 of them in the past two games, but both were losses because the Flyers scored only once.
14Ducks · Trends14
The Ducks aren't doing it against Pacific Division rivals this season with only three wins in 17 games.
15Flames · Trends15
Jarome Iginla has scored only four goals in 2010 and none so far in February.
16Predators · Trends16
Falling fast in the West with only three wins in their past 10 games.
17Red Wings · Trends17
The injury jinx isn't letting up in Detroit with Tomas Holmstrom going down almost as soon as he returned.
18Hurricanes · Trends18
The selloff has officially begun with Niclas Wallin leaving. Ray Whitney is likely to be next.
19Canadiens · Trends20
Jaroslav Halak is starting to take control of the starting goaltending job in Montreal.
20Blues · Trends19
Plenty of pain caused by this offense. The Blues have won only 13 of 28 one-goal decisions, and eight of 25 when the other team scores first.
21Stars · Trends22
Marty Turco is making himself more attractive as the trade deadline approaches. The Stars goalie has stopped 98 of 101 shots in his past three starts.
22Wild · Trends21
The Wild are staying in the playoff hunt because of the way they play at home. Minnesota has picked up points in its past nine games at the Xcel.
23Thrashers · Trends23
Is Kari Lehtonen, just back from his conditioning stint, still the goalie of the future or one of the past?
24Rangers · Trends24
He rarely gets any goal support, so Henrik Lundqvist had to turn back 41 shots to end his personal six-game losing streak.
25Bruins · Trends25
Did you expect that it would take anything less than a shutout to end an ugly 10-game losing streak?
26Panthers · Trends13
Florida's offense has gone missing lately with the Panthers scoring only 12 times in the past 10 games.
27Blue Jackets · Trends28
Change apparently is good for the Jackets, who have won their first two under new coach Claude Noel.
28Islanders · Trends27
The ice might be thinning under coach Scott Gordon as the Islanders have been playing themselves out of the postseason race of late.
29Maple Leafs · Trends29
New Leafs goalie looks like the Giggy of old with shutouts in his first two starts.
30Oilers · Trends30
Ethan Moreau hasn't scored in 33 games, Shawn Horcoff in 15. That helps explain why Edmonton has only 11 goals in its past seven games.

Of course, I'm a Flyers fan.  Everyone always seems to believe their team should be higher, and I understand my bias.

But the flyers are playing great hockey and look to me like the team to beat in the East.  They just shut down the hottest team in hockey and made it look easy.  It took a 5 on 3 for the ...(more)

...was an idiot.  It's just that simple.  This guy is blowing their slow start way out of proportion.  If you've been following hockey for...  oh I don't know, the last 15 years, you know you don't count out the Wings that early in the season.  If you did, damn I wish I could make bets with you...

The lack of respect the Avalanche are getting is ridiculous. This latest power ranking has them ranked at 13th. 13th?? Seriously???

The Avs are 3rd in the NHL with 29 points and have beaten very quality teams so far this season. They have beaten the Sharks and the Blac

The rankings are just to schizophrenic for me.  Hawks should consistently be a top five team.  They have played through a slew of injuries better than most of the other hard hit teams.  Then again CBS has a poll asking who is the best team in the NHL and fail to put the Blackhawks as an answer but manage to put the ...(more)

Anyone else notice that as of right now the Atlantic Division owns 5 of the top 8 spots in the East?  I think it would be safe to say that this is obviously the toughest division in hockey and the Eastern representative in the Stanley Cup may very well come from this division.

Pittsburgh may fall behind like they did last year, but they are going to be the team to beat comes April.

The Briuns deserve to at number 20 there is no doubt.
He is blaming the special teams, well it looks like the PK has come around in there last 5, and not having savard their play maker is killing the the Power Play, but that will change in the next couple weeks, as long as they can stay afloat I see them becoming very dangerous when Savy is back on the ice.
It's been a tough

They are without question the best team in the NHL! Just ask any of us leaf fans.  The Monster is the Messiah and Kessel is going to break gretzky's Goals in a season mark, hell, he might even put up 100.  The monster is the Best goalie in the league HANDS DOWN, and they have a crazy good back up in Vesa Toskala.&n ...(more)

So the Avs have a little slide and suddenly they are #13, behind inferior teams like Detroit and Calgary? Come on Wes, I'll take this Avs team (#13??) over Detroit (#9???) any day. And I'll definitely bet on them over your #6 Flames, who they just beat tonight (easily on Hejduk's tie breaking goal). So they have a lot of young tal ...(more)

Best GF/GA ratio in the NHL.  The best combo of Offense and Defense.
Good job as always Wes.  Overall, very good rankings and analysis.  I always look forward to Tuesday afternoons to check out your rankings.

Outside of Calgary, which is playing good team hockey, and Vancouver, which has been hot and cold, 4 of the bottom 8 teams are Canadian. Is it the constant pressure to perform? The 24/7 media attention? Can anyone explain it?

Glad to see the Isles are getting the respect that they deserve.  They probably will not make the playoffs but they are clearly not the pushover they were last year.  I know it is very early but, Tavares is on his way to a Rookie of the Year Award and Scott Gordon could be in the running for Coach of the Year.
