NHL roundup: Hartnell's goal late in third powers Flyers past Isles

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Scott Hartnell scored from the high slot with 5:27 left, and Brian Boucher made 28 saves in Philadelphia Flyers' victory over the New York Islanders.

Mike Richards added his 10th goal for Philadelphia. Trent Hunter had a first-period goal for Islanders, and former Flyers goalie Martin Biron stopped 26 shots.

Jeff Carter set up Hartnell's eighth goal. Carter skated near the bench-side boards before sliding a backhand pass to an open Hartnell between the top of the circles. Hartnell's blast nestled above Biron's shoulder for the winner as Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak to finish 2-3 on a five-game trip.

New York had just one third-period shot in returning home after a seven-game trip in which it picked up eight out of a possible 14 points. Rookie John Tavares had an assist for the Islanders in their first home game since Nov. 7.

After Toronto outshot the Islanders by 40 in a New York victory, the Islanders built a 29-28 edge in shots over the Flyers. That marked the first time in seven games the Islanders produced more chances than the opposition.

But Philadelphia tightened up defensively in the third, holding the Islanders without a shot for the first 11:33. Full story

Ducks 3, Hurricanes 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Petteri Nokelainen scored the go-ahead goal with 7:17 left and the Anaheim Ducks beat Carolina, sending the Hurricanes to a franchise-record 12th consecutive road loss to start the season.

Teemu Selanne had a goal and an assist to help the Ducks earn their 300th regular-season home victory.

Anaheim's Corey Perry assisted on a power-play goal by Scott Niedermayer to extend his career-best points streak to 16 games, the longest in the NHL this season and one off the Ducks' franchise record set by Selanne during the 1998-99 campaign.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, making back-to-back starts for the first time this season, stopped 27 shots after making 41 saves and turning back three more in a shootout Monday night in a 3-2 victory against Calgary. Giguere, who was drafted 13th overall by Carolina in 1995, is 2-3-1 against the Hurricanes in seven career appearances.

Maple Leafs 4, Lightning 3

TAMPA, Fla. -- Niklas Hagman had two goals and Matt Stajan scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs past the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Nikolai Kulemin also scored to help the Maple Leafs improve to 5-11-7. Rookie defenseman Carl Gunnarsson had three assists in his sixth career NHL game.

Tampa Bay got goals from Andrej Meszaros, Vincent Lecavalier and Ryan Malone. The Lightning, 5-1-4 at home, entered as the last Eastern Conference team without a home loss in regulation.

Stajan gave Toronto a 4-3 lead with a second-period breakaway goal with 1:47 remaining.

Blues 4, Stars 3 (SO)

DALLAS -- Brad Boyes scored in the second round of the shootout, and Ty Conklin stopped Stephane Robidas in the third to give the St. Louis Blues a victory against the Dallas Stars.

Brad Richards scored for Dallas in the first round, but Andy McDonald countered for St. Louis. Dallas' Mike Ribeiro hit the goal post with his second-round attempt, and Boyes scored through Marty Turco's pads to give the Blues the edge.

T.J. Oshie gave the Blues a 3-2 advantage with 8:59 remaining, firing a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Turco on the glove side for St. Louis' first lead.

But Brenden Morrow tied it at 3 for Dallas on a deflection off Richards' shot with 25.4 seconds left in regulation and Turco off for a sixth attacker.

Kings 3, Oilers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Jonathan Quick made 22 saves, and Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist in the Los Angeles Kings' victory against the Edmonton Oilers.

Matt Greene and Alexander Frolov also scored to help the Kings end a two-game losing streak. Ryan Potulny scored for the Oilers.

Greene, a former Oilers player acquired by the Kings in the trade for defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, gave the Kings a 2-1 lead with 4:28 left. Greene beat Jeff Deslauriers with a point shot high to the stick side.

Frolov iced the game with an empty-net goal.

Flames 2, Coyotes 1

CALGARY, Alberta -- Nigel Dawes scored the go-ahead goal with 5:44 remaining, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves in the Calgary Flames' victory against the Phoenix Coyotes.

David Moss found Dawes with a pass from behind the Phoenix net and Dawes one-timed the puck past Ilya Bryzgalov for his fifth goal of the season and first in 13 games.

Daymond Langkow opened the scoring for the Flames late in the second period, and Keith Yandle tied it on a power play midway through the third.

In a dangerous rush with two minutes remaining, Kiprusoff kicked out a pad to stop Peter Mueller, then sprawled to deny Shane Doan on the rebound.
