Power Rankings: Ducks again heat up, heading north

Not that they were supposed to be. Anaheim barely snuck into the playoffs with its late-season charge last year, but upset the Presidents' Trophy-winning Sharks in the first round and took the Red Wings to a seventh game. Salary cap issues caused the Ducks to lose key defensemen Chris Pronger and Francois Beauchemin, but with Scott Niedermayer back and the additions of Saku Koivu and Joffrey Lupul up front, Anaheim seemed to have enough to build on from last season.
Instead, injuries set it back, the goaltending was spotty in the early going and the Ducks headed toward the Christmas break looking like a team that would be selling at the trade deadline. Anaheim continues to occupy last place in the Pacific Division, but is on an 8-3-1 run, has won seven in a row at home, and after a gritty comeback win Sunday against Calgary -- the fifth time the Ducks have come back this season after trailing by two goals -- they start the new week only six points shy of a playoff spot.
Still, it won't get any easier because the Ducks are without three of their top six forwards these days. Teemu Selanne is out 2-6 weeks with a broken jaw, Koivu's knee sprain will keep him sidelined for a week or two and Lupul is out indefinitely after back surgery was complicated by an infection.
The bright side for Anaheim is the offense coming from the big line of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan, better recent netminding from Jonas Hiller and most important, the wins.
"We're looking at the standings," Perry said. "We know what's going on. It's up to us."
