Rangers' Gaborik plays despite fighting flu, scores goal

  •

NEW YORK -- Marian Gaborik returned to the New York Rangers' lineup Monday night despite still feeling the effects of the flu.

Gaborik skated in the morning and during warmups before the Rangers faced the Pittsburgh Penguins, but his status wasn't determined until game time approached. He made an impact, though, scoring his fifth goal of the season in the second period to cut New York's deficit to 3-1.

Gaborik, who led the Rangers last season with 42 goals and 86 points, sat out because of the illness on Saturday night when New York won at Nashville.

The right wing, who has 11 points in 13 games this season, sat out 12 times because of a separated left shoulder sustained Oct. 15 in the home opener.

New York, which played with 11 forwards and seven defensemen at Nashville, scratched defenseman Matt Gilroy from the lineup to make room for Gaborik. Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard missed his third straight game because of a shoulder injury.
