--When Capitals defenseman John Erskine was hit with six minutes in penalties on one play (a double-minor for high sticking and two for elbowing Matthieu Darche) people went scurrying for the last time something like that happened. Donald Brashear managed the same trifecta when he sucker punched the Bruins' Shane Hnidy on March 8, 2008. And who can forget the time former Flyer Dan Carcillo was slapped for 19 penalty minutes for sucker punching former Capital Matt Bradley in 2010?
--Capitals coach Dale Hunter shook up his lineup by adding center Mathieu Perreault and defenseman John Erskine and starting backup goalie Michal Neuvirth. All three had an impact on the game. Perreault scored the game's first goal, Erskine was slapped with a triple-minor penalty, and Neuvirth recorded his second shutout of the season.
--The Caps have been outshot in 11 of their last 12 games and managed a season-low 15 shots against the Canadiens. This time, it was by design as the Caps fell into a defensive trap after taking a 2-0 lead. The Caps are 13-13-2 when getting outshot this season. They are also 15-0-0 when leading after two periods.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"As a player I couldn't care less if he's driving a convertible or a truck. He's our coach and he's our leader and he's been a huge influence on our group." -- Brooks Laich on coach Dale Hunter not bringing a car with him from London, Ontario, after being hired by the Capitals.
