Sabres shorthanded season-high seven times in loss
The Sabres have had trouble winning games that aren't evenly played. When they spend the game skating four-on-five (or worse), they don't have a chance.
Buffalo was short-handed a season-high seven times Tuesday night, and New Jersey capitalized twice on the power play en route a 4-1 victory.
"We took too many penalties to win a hockey game," center Derek Roy said. "A couple of the penalties we shouldn't have put our stick there. We've got to win games, and you can't be taking penalties."
It was the second straight loss for the Sabres, who look to be sellers headed toward the Feb. 27 trade deadline. They are just 6-8-2 in their last 16 games, and that includes a 5-0-1 run before their current slump. They head to Philadelphia on Thursday looking to play more at even-strength.
"You've got to be more disciplined," defenseman Mike Weber said. "That's about it. I thought we played well in spurts, then penalties killed us."
