Byron is latest youngster to contribute

The young guns are finding ways to get it done.

Although the Flames are suffering through one of the most injury-ravaged seasons in recent memory, they continue to get production from unexpected sources.

In Saturday's victory over the Vancouver Canucks, rookie Roman Horak scored a goal in his first game back in the NHL as a call-up. In Tuesday's win over another Canadian rival, it was Paul Byron who made the most of a penalty shot in the second period to lead the Flames past the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-1 at the Saddledome.

Byron was recalled Monday when it was announced Mikael Backlund would miss at least a month with an undisclosed upper-body injury suspected to be a shoulder separation or dislocation.

The 22-year-old was in on a breakaway when he was hooked by Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf and made good on his second attempt with no one on his tail.

"I had a couple last year and I scored," Byron said "I think I've been one of the first three or five in the shootouts the last few years in the American League, so I'm used to those situations. You're just in your own little zone out there.

"Just stay calm, stay focused, go down, make a couple of fakes, read what the goalie gives me and just make the best move."
