Malkin adds to league-leading point total
It's the same old story for the Penguins, but it's a story that isn't getting old.
Center Evgeni Malkin continues to dominate the league and did so against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday at Consol Energy Center. Malkin scored twice and now has 69 points, which leads the league, after guiding the Penguins to a 4-2 win over the Lightning.
Malkin has now scored a goal in eight straight home games, which is the second-longest mark in franchise history. Only team owner Mario Lemieux possesses a longer streak, as he once produced goals in 11 straight home games.
Not only is Malkin scoring goals seemingly every game, but he's doing it with a variety of highlight-reel performances. Sunday night against the Lightning was no exception.
With Pittsburgh trailing 2-0 in the first period and the Penguins on the power play, Malkin received a pass from defenseman Kris Letang and ripped a one-timer from the right circle that hit just under the crossbar to pull the Penguins within a goal. He was just getting started.
Malkin later barged to the net and finished off a two-on-one with Chris Kunitz. However, it was on Kunitz's earlier goal that Malkin's dominance was best illustrated. Although the center did not receive a point on Kunitz's game-tying goal, his contribution simply can't be ignored. Malkin, who never touched the puck on the rush, floated toward the right wing boards. Two Tampa Bay players instinctively followed him to the right wing boards, leaving a clear path for Kunitz. Instead of passing off to Malkin, Kunitz took advantage of the opportunity by skating straight toward the net and scoring.
Malkin has scored 15 goals in his past 14 games.
Next up for Malkin and the Penguins is a Wednesday home game against Anaheim.
