Needless to say, we're pretty excited about it here, and in anticipation of our premiere on Wednesday, April 4, we decided to put a league together. Novel idea, right?
The cast -- which includes not only me, but Al Melchior, Nando Di Fino and our host Jorge Sedano -- will compete alongside the crew for bragging rights in this 10-team Head-to-Head categorical league. Usually when we say Head-to-Head here at CBSSports.com, we mean Head-to-Head points. In categorical play, each week is like a mini Rotisserie game. Two teams square off in the standard 5x5 categories. The one that fares better in the majority of the categories wins the matchup.
Because contributions like doubles, triples and walks have no influence on the scoring, the evaluation of players is closer to Rotisserie. Then again, because each team starts fewer hitters than a standard Rotisserie format and because the season is reduced from a marathon to a series of short sprints, some of the draft strategies -- such as loading up on pitchers early and avoiding streakier, injury-prone players -- are closer to Head-to-Head.
The hybrid format led to some curious bargains early in the draft, such as usual second-rounders Ian Kinsler, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Justin Upton and Jose Reyes all going in the Round 3.
Of course, playing with only 10 teams likely had something to do with that as well.
