Julien denounces racial remarks made at Ward

The Sports Xchange

--Coach Claude Julien and the club denounced the scores of racial remarks on Twitter aimed at Joel Ward, after Ward scored the goal that knocked the Bruins out of the playoff.

"I didn't find out until later and I'm really disappointed," Julien said at the annual break-up day. "There's absolutely no need for that and as the organization said, it certainly doesn't reflect our organization and even our fan base. It just takes one or a few of those comments to come out and it really tarnishes things.

"I was really disappointed to be honest with you. You hope that somewhere down the road we're going to get past this stuff. I was really disappointed, I was sitting at home with my wife and I saw it on the news and couldn't believe that that had happened. Again, it's unfortunate. I think (Joel Ward) is a player that deserves to be in this league and he's been a good player. I know he was in Nashville; did a great job. He's come out from a Canadian university I think if I'm correct, and worked his way into this league and for something like that to come out is disappointing to say the least and I'll leave it at that."

--The Bruins scored just two power play goals in their first-round playoff loss to the Capitals.

"When you look at your power play, and that's not to defend it, you don't have anybody in the Top 30 (in the league) in the scoring and basically you have to do it by committee," Julien said. "That's what we had to do this year. We finished in the middle of the pack this year in the regular season and more than anything else, the thing that sticks out the most is the inability to score the times that we did score and the times we needed to score."

--D Zdeno Chara presented each of his teammates with a framed photo and game summary of his 1,000th NHL game, played March 24 at Los Angeles. "I love every guy we have in this room. I'm very proud to be their teammate," the captain said. "It's just something for them to have. I felt it was a special day in my career."

--A stat nugget that has to be one of the best of the year: after March 8, the Capitals won as many games, five, at TD Garden as did the Bruins.

--And speaking of playing at home, the B's were 1-3 at TD Garden in the playoffs, losing their last three. Last year, in winning the Cup, the Bruins were 10-3 at home in the postseason, 10-1 after an 0-2 start against the Canadiens, ending with a 5-0 runs against the Lightning and Canucks

"I think this team showed their character during the Stanley Cup run and win, and I think they showed it this year. They gave it all they had and it just didn't end up being enough this time." -- G Tim Thomas on the season.
