DETROIT -- Veteran center Igor Larionov
has reportedly rejected a proposed one-year, $1 million offer to return
to the Detroit Red Wings for another season.
The Detroit Free Press, citing a team source, reported Wednesday
that Larionov turned down the offer from the club and is contemplating
retirement.
The Russian has been a part of three Stanley Cup championship squads in
Detroit. In his NHL career, Larionov has scored 168 goals with 465
assists.
Last season, he had 10 goals and 33 assists in 74 games for the Wings.
Larionov, who made $1.5 million last season, becomes an unrestricted
free agent on July 1. If he returns to the NHL for the 2003-04 season,
he would be the oldest player in the league. He will be 43 in December.
Larionov, who scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime in Game 3
of the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals at Carolina, has also spent time with
Vancouver, San Jose and Florida.
