Attempt for longest hockey game ever melts away

EDMONTON, Alberta -- After 87 hours, 10 minutes, an attempt at breaking the world record for longest hockey game was abandoned because the ice was melting from unseasonably mild temperatures.

The game fell well short of the Guinness record of 130 hours, seven minutes set by the Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Moose Fraternity, Oct. 13-18, 2003.

Two teams of 20 began to play Wednesday and had hoped to continue for 144 hours until Tuesday raising money for a children's hospital.

Players were allowed 10 minutes rest per hour during ice resurfacing and remained at the rink for the duration. Tents were pitched next to the ice so players could take naps. Action was shown on the video screens above the ice in Rexall Place during the Edmonton Oilers' NHL game Saturday night.
