WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals re-signed Jeff Halpern to a one-year contract Tuesday, keeping one of the franchise's few remaining recognizable faces.
The 28-year-old center led Washington in scoring last season with a career-high 46 points, thanks in part to the team unloading a number of high-priced offensive veterans such as Jaromir Jagr, Peter Bondra and Mike Grier during the season.
Halpern was playing some of his best hockey at the end of last season, scoring four goals and four assists in a four-game stretch that earned him NHL offensive player of the week honors for April 4.
Halpern, who grew up in nearby Potomac, Md., has 76 career goals.
