He agreed to terms on a deal worth $1.6 million, general manager Ken
Holland said. Under the current collective bargaining agreement that
expires Sept. 15, Dandenault would have the right to become an
unrestricted free agent following next season because he will have
played 10 NHL seasons and will be making less than the league's average
salary.
Dandenault missed more than a month last season because of a broken
right foot. He finished with three goals and nine assists in 65 games.
The versatile Dandenault was also used up front at center and wing by
coach Dave Lewis, but was returned to defense following injuries to
Chris Chelios and Jason Woolley.
The 28-year-old Quebec native has won three Stanley Cup titles with the
Red Wings, who chose him in the second round of the 1994 draft.
Dandenault has spent his entire NHL career with Detroit, notching 48
goals and 101 assists in 616 games.
