Pettinger, 23, played in 71 games for the Capitals last season, notching seven goals and five assists. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Canadian was the Capitals' second-round choice (43rd overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. In 143 career games with the Capitals, Pettinger has scored 14 goals with eight assists.
The Capitals also re-signed left wing Graham Mink and defenseman Nolan Yonkman on Wednesday. All three players were restricted free agents.
Mink skated in his first NHL game last season with the Capitals. The 25-year-old spent most of the season in the minors.
Yonkman played only one game for the Capitals last season due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee. The 23-year-old made his NHL debut in 2001-02, playing in 11 games for the Capitals and scoring one goal.
