Thrashers become veteran G Dunham's fourth team

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers added some insurance in net Friday, signing veteran goalie Mike Dunham.

Starting goalie Kari Lehtonen is only 21 and backup Pasi Nurminen was lost for the season with a career-threatening knee injury, leaving the team without adequate depth and experience at the position.

The 33-year-old Dunham has played 358 NHL games over eight seasons with New Jersey, Nashville and the New York Rangers, and he played for the United States in the 1992, 1994 and 2002 Olympics.

"In signing Mike, we have added a solid, veteran goalie with more than 300 games of NHL experience to our club," general manager Don Waddell said.

Waddell said Dunham "gives us the talent and experience in net that is necessary to be successful in this league."

Dunham has a 129-163-39 record, a 2.69 career goals-against average and 18 shutouts. He led Rangers goalies with 16 wins in 2003-04.
