Maple Leafs goalie Belfour out for season after back surgery

TORONTO -- Maple Leafs goalie Ed Belfour underwent back surgery to repair a herniated disc on Wednesday.

Belfour hasn't played since March 10.

He underwent the surgery in Los Angeles and is expected to begin his rehabilitation upon his return to Toronto next week.

Belfour turns 41 this month and he's had history of back problems, but he plans on playing next season. He had a sub-par season with Toronto -- going 22-22-4 with a goals-against average of 3.29 in 49 games.

The Maple Leafs will likely buy out the last year of Belfour's contract. Belfour has a career record of 457-303-115.

Toronto is danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1998.
