Coyotes acquire backup goaltender Tellqvist from Leafs

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes traded minor league forward Tyson Nash and a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft to the Toronto Maple Leafs for backup goalie Mikael Tellqvist on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Nash, known as an enforcer throughout his career, has spent this year with San Antonio in the AHL. In 374 NHL games with St. Louis and Phoenix, Nash has 27 goals with 37 assists and 673 penalty minutes.

The 27-year-old Tellqvist went 16-16-2 in parts of three seasons with Toronto, posting a 3.01 goals-against average and .895 save percentage. Tellqvist played in one game with the Maple Leafs this season -- a 2-1 loss to New Jersey on Nov. 18. He also has appeared in three games with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

Tellqvist played behind Andrew Raycroft and Jean-Sebastien Aubin in Toronto. He lost his backup job to Aubin in training camp.

"We're happy for him. He'll be given an opportunity that he's earned," Toronto general manager John Ferguson said.

Also Tuesday, the Coyotes sent goalie David LeNeveu to their AHL affiliate in San Antonio, recalled defenseman Travis Roche from the Rampage and announced that defenseman Nick Boynton will be sidelined up to four weeks with a fractured foot.

Boynton was injured Nov. 9 when he blocked a shot against Dallas but played five more games before the fracture was revealed by X-rays taken Monday.

LeNeveu had a 2-1-0 record and 3.86 goals-against average in six games with Phoenix. Roche had one goal, eight assists and 16 penalty minutes in 17 games with San Antonio after being signed as a free agent.
