Power Rankings
The Red Wings have stumbled their way into wild card position and their 23-season streak of reaching the playoffs is at risk. They get two games against the Hurricanes, plus one against Montreal, to get things settled and keep the streak alive.
A 5-8-1 run through March is bound to concern head coach Mike Babcock, but really the Red Wings haven't been nearly as threatening since February. They've gone 11-11-3 over the last two calendar months.
Consistency hasn't really been where it needs to be, but Pavel Datsyuk hasn't been there either. He's been held out of three straight and is obviously a player the Wings need healthy to be at their best.
Over the last few weeks, it's been difficult to know which Red Wings team was going to show up. If it's the one that beat the Penguins 5-1 Sunday, those guys are pretty scary. If it's the one that lost to the Flyers 7-2 on Saturday, that's a different kind of scary.
Armed with the league's best power play and a roster full of scoring threats, the Red Wings are looking like a team most would rather avoid in the first round of the playoffs. That's probably why we'll see a big fight between the Habs and Lightning to finish first in the Atlantic.
The Red Wings are taking a chance on Erik Cole being a solid scorer for them, and he may be. Adding Marek Zidlicky for defensive depth should be helpful as well. The Wings had a pretty good group to begin with, but they're improved with their deadline work.
After a dominant January, the Red Wings have hit a rougher stretch in February with four wins against four losses this month. They're in the midst of one of the toughest segments of their schedule.
The Red Wings have hit a really tough portion of their schedule and haven't started it off on the best foot. They've lost three straight with a six-game road trip through the Western Conference awaiting them.
The Red Wings continue to fly under the radar as one of the league's best teams. They're 11-3-0 since Jan. 1 and they've been without their starting goaltender for a month. They'll keep the Atlantic race interesting.
The Red Wings have essentially been playing with their third string goalie and have won seven of eight since starter Jimmy Howard went down with injury. There's a lot more to that kind of success than resiliency. The Wings appear to be this good.
Preseason Power Rankings
A controversial goal away from at least getting a point against the Ducks, the Wings have looked solid despite missing Pavel Datsyuk. Gustav Nyquist has helped in that department.
