The Isles did not look great in March and have just three wins in their last 11 games. They still have a shot at home ice in the first round, though. A strong finish with three games left could go a long way for this team in a lot of ways.
The Isles picked a pretty poor time to slump. They went 4-6-3 in the month of March and sit third in the Metropolitan. They not only have to battle Pittsburgh in the standings to try to earn home ice, but also have to worry about the Capitals, who are three points away.
The Islanders have dealt with key injuries, which allowed the Rangers to zoom past and build a commanding Metro lead. It's looking like the Isles are set up for a first-round date with the Penguins, but they're still fighting for home ice in the first round.
The Islanders have lost their grip on the Metropolitan Division lead and could have a tough time getting it back from the Rangers. They've lost six of their last eight and face a tough schedule down the stretch.
The Islanders have their New York neighbors breathing down their necks for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division, but they should get a boost with Kyle Okposo back soon. Meanwhile, John Tavares has taken over the league scoring lead with 72 points in 68 games.
Garth Snow only made minor moves, but they were effective ones. Tyler Kennedy is a solid fourth-liner with Stanley Cup experience. Michal Neuvirth is a better No. 2 than Chad Johnson was. Those are deals that help now and going into the postseason.
The Isles have gone 7-4-1 in the month of February and could be getting forward Kyle Okposo back sooner than later. Recent injuries could challenge them further, but this club continues to impress.
Their four-game winning streak may have grinded to a halt at the hands of the rival Rangers, but the Isles still have a slight lead on the Metropolitan Division and have recovered well from a recent swoon.
The Islanders have been able to maintain their lead in the Metropolitan Division despite some recent stumbles. The race is pretty tight, though, with the Penguins trailing by just one point.
The Islanders have lost two straight without second-leading scorer Kyle Okposo in the lineup. They're still one of the six teams at the top of the league with 32 wins this season. Four straight games against Eastern foes could help them gain some ground.
Preseason Power Rankings
A pair of wins over the injury-depleted Hurricanes isn't going to sell anyone on this team quite yet, but this Islanders roster pretty clearly is much deeper than last year.
