The Islanders are in for a pretty tight race to the finish in the Metropolitan. With the Caps running away with first, the Isles face heat from not only the Penguins and Rangers, but also the Devils and Hurricanes, who are one and two points behind, respectively.
Knocked off their pace a bit from earlier this season, the Isles are back in third place in the Metro and trail the rival Rangers by three points. Brock Nelson has been a real bright spot with six goals over his last seven games.
With the Capitals running away with the Metro, the battle between the Islanders and Rangers becomes more interesting. The two rivals have been flipping spots frequently in the standings and could for some time. Meanwhile, Brock Nelson appears poised for a 30-goal season in Brooklyn.
The Islanders have taken a few steps back lately and injuries to key defensemen Johnny Boychuk and Travis Hamonic will make the road ahead even tougher. The Rangers just took back second place in the division from them, too.
The Islanders have won four of their last six, but none of the wins was as impressive as the 6-5 victory over the league-leading Stars. Injuries to Jaroslav Halak and now defenseman Johnny Boychuk will challenge this group going forward.
The Isles have lost four of their last five games, with just one goal or fewer scored in those losses. Now it appears starting goalie Jaroslav Halak will miss some time with injury again, though backup Thomas Greiss has been strong in 16 appearances with a .934 save percentage.
The Isles are one point ahead of the Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan Division. They've won eight of their last 11 and broke out of an exremely brief scoring slump with five goals against the hapless Ducks.
The Isles are gaining on the top dogs in the Metropolitan thanks to points in each of their last seven games. Even when New York hasn't been at its best, it seems to be in pretty much every game it plays.
The Islanders never seem to get too high or low. They're hitting another high point with wins in three of their past four games.
The Isles got a good lesson from the Canadiens over the weekend, showing that there's work to be done to get on par with the East's big boys. Off the ice, the team has to deal with possibly losing talented Travis Hamonic after his trade request.
Preseason Power Rankings
Due to some unfortunate scheduling, the Islanders had to play the defending Stanley Cup champion without their starting goaltender. They still managed to look decent enough in losses before earning their first win Monday against a tough Jets club.
