Garth Snow only made minor moves, but they were effective ones. Tyler Kennedy is a solid fourth-liner with Stanley Cup experience. Michal Neuvirth is a better No. 2 than Chad Johnson was. Those are deals that help now and going into the postseason.
The Isles have gone 7-4-1 in the month of February and could be getting forward Kyle Okposo back sooner than later. Recent injuries could challenge them further, but this club continues to impress.
Their four-game winning streak may have grinded to a halt at the hands of the rival Rangers, but the Isles still have a slight lead on the Metropolitan Division and have recovered well from a recent swoon.
The Islanders have been able to maintain their lead in the Metropolitan Division despite some recent stumbles. The race is pretty tight, though, with the Penguins trailing by just one point.
The Islanders have lost two straight without second-leading scorer Kyle Okposo in the lineup. They're still one of the six teams at the top of the league with 32 wins this season. Four straight games against Eastern foes could help them gain some ground.
The Islanders are about to experience some serious adversity without top winger Kyle Okposo for the next two months. We'll get a pretty good idea of just how ready the Islanders are for this long grind pretty quick here.
The Isles have been scoring a ton with at least four goals in each of their last three games. The dynamic duo of John Tavares and Kyle Okposo has looked unstoppable at times this season with a combined 89 points.
John Tavares can put this team on his back when he needs to, but that's rarely been necessary. He's still leading the team with 39 points and has been key to the club's recent run of success.
An ugly loss to the Oilers somewhat mars a recent stretch of fantastic hockey from the Islanders. They're 7-2-1 in their last 10 and it seems like they are the good kind of streaky this year.
You never quite know what to expect from this hot-and-cold club. It's still a far cry from last season when they were cold a heck of a lot more than hot.
Preseason Power Rankings
A pair of wins over the injury-depleted Hurricanes isn't going to sell anyone on this team quite yet, but this Islanders roster pretty clearly is much deeper than last year.
