Power Rankings
The Coyotes picked a bad time to lose four straight and six of seven games but the Stars have helped keep them around. It might all come down to next Sunday at home vs. Dallas.
So far the Coyotes are getting by without Mike Smith, earning five of eight points since Thomas Greiss has been in net. Will that pace be good enough over the final seven?
If it weren't for the Bruins, the Coyotes might be on a nice little run right now as they've won five straight vs. teams not from Boston to take a slight lead in the playoff race.
Here go the Coyotes again? They have rather quietly won five of their last seven games, albeit not against the greatest competition. That will get stiffer in the next nine days.
Dear defense: You were starting to look so good for a couple of games until a third-period meltdown in DC. Don't blow two-goal leads when in playoff races. Signed, the Coyotes.
This could have started better. The Coyotes lost all three games this week (one beyond regulation) which isn't ideal for teams in a dogfight for one spot.
Looking back at the past nine games, the Coyotes have alternated wins and losses from game to game; .500 hockey is likely not going to be good enough down the stretch.
To start a five-game home stand, the Coyotes beat the Kings and Penguins but lost to the Sabres. Those are the points they need to pick up with the wild-card race tightening up.
The Coyotes just can't find the consistency, losing three of four this week. Still, even with a minus-9 goal differential, they're just four back of a playoff spot with two games in hand.
The funk is over for the Coyotes, who won two in a row after losing six of seven. After that kind of amazing they're only four points out of playoff position with games in hand.
Preseason Power Rankings
Any goodwill from a very strong win over the Rangers disappears after a 4-1 loss to the Sharks. Why? San Jose outshot them 51-23. 51. To. 23.
