The Jets had a disappointing year that overshadowed some of the positives. Blake Wheeler was a top-10 scorer in the league, while Mark Schiefele had a breakout season. There are pieces in place to get back on track as soon as next season.
What happens next with the Jets? Was this season part of the process or will change be coming? After making the playoffs last year, the standards were raised and this Jets squad didn't come anywhere close to reaching the high bar they set.
This hasn't been a fun year for the Jets, but the recent scoring from young forward Mark Scheifele is helping end the season with at least one positive thought. The 23-year-old has 25 goals and 52 points.
Jets fans can look at this team with deep disappointment, but if they need a distraction, here's one: Last year's first-round pick, Kyle Connor, is leading the NCAA in scoring as a freshman at Michigan. There's something else to look forward to.
The Jets are fully in spoiler mode now as some of their upcoming games could have playoff implications for their opponents. Winnipeg scores just enough to give those teams battling for seeding something to worry about when they play the Jets.
There was at least a little good news in a season with not much for the Jets. They're going to get an outdoor game next season against the Oilers. That was a nice temporary distraction amid a skid in which the team has lost eight of 10.
As difficult as it was to trade Andrew Ladd, it was absolutely the right thing to do. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff got a nice haul out of the deal, too, with a strong prospect in Marko Dano, a first-round pick and a conditional third. That's maximizing value right there.
It appears likely that Andrew Ladd is on his way out of town via trade. The Jets have to do something to make sure this incredibly disappointing year wasn't a complete waste. Another high draft pick awaits after the thrill of last year's playoff run has all but worn off.
The Jets just sent their best goalie back to the AHL to make way for Ondrej Pavelec. Connor Hellebuyck had been a bright spot for them, but as the playoffs appear less likely, letting Hellebuyck get reps in the AHL while preparing for next season might not be the worst idea.
The Jets re-signed Dustin Byfuglien to ensure one of their best players sticks around. Now they have to decide what to do with captain Andrew Ladd. The playoffs aren't happening this season, but this team has a shot to do some great things in the next few years with the young players they've been developing.
Preseason Power Rankings
After blowing the barn doors off of the Bruins in their season opener, the Jets reminded us that their top six is extremely strong. Blake Wheeler is off to a flying start with four points.
