The Red Wings had high expectations for rookie left wing Ville Leino this season. When he failed to come close to meeting them, the 26-year-old Finn felt coach Mike Babcock's wrath.

Leino was back in the lineup for Tuesday's 2-0 win over Boston, after being a healthy scratch the previous game, and will play in Thursday's game against San Jose, too, since the injury-riddled club has no spare forwards.

But if Leino doesn't begin playing harder and showing more intensity, he could become a frequent scratch this season.

"He can't get snuffed out," Babcock said. "What I mean by that is when someone puts their hand on you or their body on you, you got to fight through checks, you got to compete to get into scoring areas."

Competing hasn't been an issue for Leino. Two years ago, the late bloomer was named the top player in the Finnish Elite League. He had a decent season with Grand Rapids (AHL) last year and showed much promise during his 13 games with the Wings, picking up five goals and four assists.

Leino's strength is his ability to hold onto the puck in the offensive zone. He generally goes to the hard areas, along the boards and in the corners, and takes the puck to the net. But he hasn't been doing much of that this season -- he has just two goals and one assist in 12 games.

RED WINGS 2, BRUINS 0: Chris Osgood put together his second straight strong outing, stopping 29 shots for his 50th career shutout. Only New Jersey's Martin Brodeur has more shutouts (103) among active goaltenders. Henrik Zetterberg (power play) and Tomas Holmstrom scored goals 3:22 apart in the first period, and the Wings made it stand with a strong defensive effort.

With Jimmy Howard playing more and more and doing very well each game, do we see the Red Wings transitioning from Osgood to Howard as the number one goalie? I personally think that they should continue to play Howard because he seems to be getting better each game. ...(more)

To all Red Wing Fans are we considering the thoughts of rebuilding in the off season because we just dont look like the team that went the stanley cup two years in a row and what is the reason for so many loses is it the goalies or is it just the fact that we're a very seasoned team  and need to get younger legs.... I as a fan would like to see us back in the domination category again

It has become evident that the 15+ years of logging the most minutes of any player in the NHL......
Playing into June in many of those years ........and almost never suffering injuries....... or getting breathers in meaningless late season games...... has taken its toll

Should this be his last season? With the prospect of a neccesary rebuilding mode, a nice cus

I was unable to purchase center ice this year, but I have been keeping an eye on the wings this year. It seems like every other game someone is either hurt or sick. We currently have 6 players out and 3 of which are big parts of our team in Ozzie, Filps, and Mule. But I look and we are inching our way up the standings. I will admidt that I had my doubts at first, but after seeing what we are doing ...(more)

This kid is actually pleasantly surprising me.

His rebound control is still a hair shaky, but he's improving rapidly. I just might eat crow on the kid, which is something I'l gladly do!

Many don't find it too early to think Trade Deadline.
Those in the know, see Detroit in a full blown rebuilding mode next season. With this likely, insiders are predicting Detroit to be Sellers this year with the likes of Rafalski, Cleary, Draper and Holstrom available for mid-range draft picks. Could conceivably jump start the inevitable process.
