Red Wings report: Inside shots

Red Wings forward Dan Cleary has been seeking his 100th career NHL goal for some time -- too long a time, as far as he's concerned.

Cleary has gone 12 games without a goal. Mired in an early season slump, he has just one goal, four assists and a minus-6 rating in 14 games.

He has not been skating as well as he normally does and hasn't been crashing the net like the team expects him to.

"Try to make sure I keep skating, good on the forecheck, that's how I create my offense," Cleary said. "It's not based on being in the high slot and shooting, it's always around the net. I got to make sure I stick around there."

Coming off a strong playoff performance (nine goals, 15 points, plus-17 rating), Cleary was hampered by a groin strain much of the preseason. He scored 20 goals for the Wings in 2006-07 and '07-08, and the club is counting on him to help compensate for the offense it has lost with off-season free-agent departures and early season injuries to key forwards Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula.

RED WINGS 2, SHARKS 1 (SO): Lacking the prolific offense they've had in the past due to free-agent losses and key injuries, the Wings need to win by limiting turnovers, doing a better job killing penalties, getting solid goaltending and making every goal count.

That's what they did Thursday, as Henrik Zetterberg tied the game at 5:38 of the third period and then, along with Pavel Datsyuk, scored in the shootout. Chris Osgood made 33 saves and stopped both of the Sharks' shootout attempts.

This kid is actually pleasantly surprising me.

His rebound control is still a hair shaky, but he's improving rapidly. I just might eat crow on the kid, which is something I'l gladly do!

I was unable to purchase center ice this year, but I have been keeping an eye on the wings this year. It seems like every other game someone is either hurt or sick. We currently have 6 players out and 3 of which are big parts of our team in Ozzie, Filps, and Mule. But I look and we are inching our way up the standings. I will admidt that I had my doubts at first, but after seeing what we are doing ...(more)

Many don't find it too early to think Trade Deadline.
Those in the know, see Detroit in a full blown rebuilding mode next season. With this likely, insiders are predicting Detroit to be Sellers this year with the likes of Rafalski, Cleary, Draper and Holstrom available for mid-range draft picks. Could conceivably jump start the inevitable process.

22 years ago he scored his first NHL goal Nov 10th for NJ and finishes his career with 656 goals, 1,354 pts and 2,489 PIMs and got in almost 100 fights in his NHL careerCool They don't make power forwards like Shanny anymore. Definitely Hall of Fame bound.

that was fun.

i know the Blue Jackets are a bad team but still we are ravaged with injuries and we just dropped 9 on them. everyone got in on the act and the bounces went our way big time. every little bit helps and getting on a roll like this makes a player happy and gets them in a positive frame of mind where they aren't pus

Chris Osgood established a wall in front of the Wings' goal with a flurry of great saves while lying on his stomach in the first period. Boston never cracked that wall despite taking 29 shots, giving Osgood his first shutout of the year and the Wings a 2-0 victory.

The Wings opened scoring in the first with a power p ...(more)

The Red Wings are starting out November right with a 2-0 record and two wins over good teams. Osgood has come to play of late and hopefully the Wings can go on a tear. They have a lot of home games in November so it would be nice to see them do well at home.
