--C Mathieu Perrault got two assists in his first NHL game. He made a great saucer-type pass over to LW Tyler Sloan, who scored to give the Caps a 1-0 first-period lead. Perrault added an assist on the team's second goal.

--LW Tomas Fleischmann scored late to cut the Devils' lead to 3-2. Fleischmann's ability to give the Caps more goal-scoring punch could prove crucial while Alex Ovechkin is out.
