Saturday, Feb. 22 will mark the 34th anniversary of the great Miracle on Ice, something you will surely hear a lot about on Saturday when the USA plays Russia in this year's Winter Olympics.
However the commemorations of that glorious day in USA Hockey history won't be limited to the Olympics in Russia, especially with that Saturday being the bronze medal game. No, back here in the States it will be honored in a way like only AHL teams can do.
The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins will host the Providence Bruins and have an Olympic Hockey Celebration night in which they're going all out. Those iconic white sweaters Team USA wore in 1980 up in Lake Placid? Yes, the Penguins are bringing thise back with a slight alteration; WBS replaces USA across the chest. Otherwise they are the same.
Admittedly, it doesn't have the same panache as the USA across the chest but I'll be if that's still not one beautiful hockey sweater right there.
Seeing as how 1980 was the last time the USA won the gold medal, maybe the AHL Penguins resurrecting these sweaters in a way will be good mojo for the American squad in Russia. And if they lose? Well we can all blame the Penguins for bad juju.
And yes, as is custom with these special-occassion jerseys, they will be available after the game for auction to benefit charity.
