WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Teenager Maria Lamb beat Kristine Holzer by nearly 5½ seconds in the 5,000 meters Monday in qualifying for the U.S. long track speedskating World Cup team.
Lamb, at 18 the team's youngest member, also won Sunday's 3,000. Her victory in the 5,000 came in Monday's only race; she finished in 7 minutes, 42.40 seconds, while Holzer's time was 7:47.99.
The U.S. roster was announced Monday after four days of qualifying races at the Pettit National Ice Center.
"The team definitely looks strong and has a great potential for bringing home some good results," sprinter coach Ryan Shimabukuro said.
The U.S. team includes six skaters who combined to win eight medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, the country's best showing since it won eight in 1980.
Chris Witty, who won gold in 2002 in the 1,000, will compete in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 during the World Cup season. Jennifer Rodriguez, who captured bronze medals in the 1,000 and 1,500 at Salt Lake City, will skate in those two events and the 3,000.
Casey FitzRandolph, who won gold in the 500 at the Olympics, and Kip Carpenter, who took bronze in the same event, were the only qualifiers at the 500 and 1,000 for the World Cup. Derek Parra, the Olympic gold medalist in the 1,500 and silver medalist in the 5,000, will compete in those two events. Joey Cheek, a bronze medalist in the 1,000, will race in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500.
The first World Cup event is Nov. 13-14 in Hamar, Norway. The U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships are here Dec. 18-22.
