COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado -- U.S. marathon runner Eddy Hellebuyck was suspended for two years after testing positive for a synthetic hormone, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said on Thursday.
Hellebuyck tested positive for EPO, or erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of oxygen-rich red blood cells and is a drug of choice in endurance sports.
Hellebuyck, 43, tested positive on Jan. 31, before the U.S. Olympic Trials.
A three-member panel of the American Arbitration Association and the North American Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the validity of the test, USADA said.
Hellebuyck's competitive results since Jan. 31 will be wiped out, including his eighth-place finish at the U.S. Olympic trials this year, USADA said.
