VIENNA, Austria -- The Netherlands' 200-meter women's medley relay team set a world record Saturday at the European short course swimming championships.
The quartet of Hinkelien Schreuder, Moniek Nijhuis, Inge Dekker and Marleen Veldhuis won in 1 minute, 48.21 seconds ahead of Germany (1:48.52) and Sweden (1:50.05). The Dutch broke the mark of 1:48.31 set by Sweden in Valencia, Spain, four years ago.
Among the men, Frederick Bousquet of France captured the 100-meter freestyle for his country's second gold medal. The 50-meter freestyle world record holder was fourth in his favored distance.
"I never expected to win the 100," he said. "My focus was on the 50 meters, but a gold is a gold."
In the women's 50-meter backstroke, Germany's Antje Buschschulte avenged her loss in the 100 to Ukraine's Kateryna Zubkova. Buschschulte won in 27.42 seconds, edging Zubkova in the final lap.
