IOC invites nations to bid on 2014 Winter Olympics

Presented by Epson

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The IOC is seeking bids for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee said Tuesday it sent out invitations to national Olympic bodies inviting them to submit applications by July 28.

The IOC executive board will meet June 21-23, 2006, to decide whether to accept all the bids or trim the list.

The complete bid files must be submitted to the IOC by Jan. 10, 2007, followed by inspection visits by the IOC evaluation commission in February and March 2007.

The host city will be selected by the full IOC at its session in Guatemala City in July 2007.

Pyeongchang, South Korea; Oestersund, Sweden; and Salzburg, Austria, have already announced plans to submit bids. Pyeongchang and Salzburg lost to Vancouver, British Columbia, in the vote for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Sofia, Bulgaria, and the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin are also considering bids.
