OLEAN, N.Y. -- St. Bonaventure appointed
former basketball player Paul Grys interim athletic director on Thursday.
Grys, a retired IBM executive, replaces Gothard Lane, who is on
administrative leave pending the school's investigation into the men's
basketball program. Lane has been told that his contract will not be
renewed.
Grys played for St. Bonaventure's 1970 Final Four team along with Bob
Lanier.
Grys' appointment comes after the Atlantic 10 Conference stripped the
Bonnies of six league victories and barred the team from the league's
postseason play after center Jamil Terrell was declared ineligible for
violating NCAA junior college transfer guidelines.
School president Robert Wickenheiser resigned on Sunday, and head coach
Jan van Breda Kolff and assistant coach Kort Wickenheiser, the son of
the school president, were placed on administrative leave.
The Bonnies could face further A-10 sanctions and a potential NCAA
investigation.
"I'm very proud of what the trustees and administration are doing, and
I'm happy to be part of it," Grys said. "I have a passion and a deep
belief in what we do and what the university stands for, and I'm looking
forward to creating a team and moving forward."
